AGILE in PMBOK 6th & 7th Edition

Agile is treated quite differently in PMBOK 6th vs. PMBOK 7th Edition. Let’s compare them clearly:

🔹 Agile in PMBOK 6th Edition (2017)

  • Agile was not fully integrated into the main PMBOK text.

  • PMI published the Agile Practice Guide (separate but bundled with 6th edition).

  • Agile references appear in each Knowledge Area but mostly in side notes (“in adaptive environments…”).

  • The focus remained predictive with ITTOs and processes.

  • Agile seen as a special approach, used when requirements are uncertain.

  • Key Highlights:

    • Mentions iterative & incremental development.

    • Encourages tailoring project management to Agile.

    • Points to hybrid approaches but not detailed.

🔹 Agile in PMBOK 7th Edition (2021)

  • Agile, hybrid, and predictive are treated equally valid — integrated throughout.

  • Whole book structured on principles and performance domains, which fit any approach.

  • Agile is embedded in:

    • Principles: adaptability, resilience, change, value delivery.

    • Domains: Development Approach & Lifecycle, Planning, Delivery, Uncertainty.

  • No separation like before → Agile is just “one way of working.”

  • Stronger emphasis on:

    • Tailoring to context

    • Value delivery & customer collaboration

    • Continuous improvement
